The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources has launched a project to distribute 20 thousand waste bins to District Assemblies.

The sector Minister, Cecilia Dapaah hinted that the project would kick start with four thousand waste bins being placed at vantage points in selected major cities and towns for public use.

She also talked about a plastic waste policy to stop the indiscriminate disposal of plastic waste which is fast destroying aquatic life.

She added that the fight against poor sanitation is a collective responsibility and everyone should come on board.

The unavailability of waste bins in major cities is said to be one of the reasons for the indiscriminate disposal of waste.

The waste is fast destroying the environment with severe impact on the country’s fish stock.

The fishing groups have already raised concerns of “catching” more plastics than fish when they go to sea.

The waste bin project is to reverse this trend where waste gathered will be sent to designated disposal sites.
