‘Protect the environment’- Group to government

More than a decade into the exploration of oil and gas in the country, best international practices regarding environmental laws and regulations in the sector have not been adopted.

These gaps make it impossible for regulatory agencies to protect the environment.

Executive Director of the Centre for Public Interest law, CEPIL, Augustine Niber attributed these gaps to the non-passage of about 40 regulations governing the oil and gas sector.

Speaking at a media sensitisation on environmental laws and regulations in the oil and gas industry, he noted that the discretionary powers given to the Ministry of Energy by the Constitution is not being applied.
