A road safety expert and consultant, Dr. Godfred Akyea Darkwa says, public education and training is the key to ensuring road safety. He says pedestrians and road users need to be educated and informed about the risk and dangers on the road to help them make informed decisions when using any road.

Speaking on Uniiq FM’s Current Affairs Programme, “Focus,” Dr. Akyea noted that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and other regulators must sit up and strictly enforce its regulations to help reduce road accidents and ensure safety.

He added that most of the country’s road designs and training manuals of the DVLA are outmoded and need to be revised.

Responding to a question on the the rising death toll on the Adentan-Madina Highway, the recent death of a female student of the West African Senior High (WASS) and the way forward, a Civil Engineer, Ben Arthur said, it is time government moved from the construction of footbridges to under ground crossing.

He noted that most footbridges in the country are too high and not appropriately situated and therefore become unattractive for pedestrians to use.
