Government has hinted that public sector workers may not enjoy an increase in their salary or wages until 2024 due to lack of money.
The Ministry of Finance announced this during a discussion on the budget organized by the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce in Accra.
“If you look at the Budget, Covid-19 is not expected to abate until the end of 2023 and we’re all looking to be tightening the belts for a while and people should not be expecting huge wage increases in the course of the next few years. This is because we don’t have money to fund for those things,” Dr Samuel Nii Noi Ashong, Technical Adviser at the Ministry disclosed while contributing to the discussion on Wednesday.
What will this decision by government mean to the ordinary Ghanaian worker? Speaking on GBC’s Uniiq Breakfast Drive, Labour Expert, Austin Gamey says he thinks the government should dialogue with Labour unions like the Trades Union Congress, TUC, instead of the imposition which will rather agitate workers.
“I wish that maybe they would begin to consult deeply,” Austin Gamey said on Thursday.
