The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has launched an ultramodern Database Management System to enhance its operations.

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, who launched the system, said there was the need to invest in it to consolidate data for service delivery.

She said the mandate of the PURC largely entailed using data to regulate utility companies, which made the completion of the centralised Database Management System (DBMS), a key component of its functions.

The Minister assured all organisations of their safety with issues regarding Cyber-attacks. “The whole country is looking at our sector to enhance public service delivery so we are also embarking on an infrastructure project to establish a three-tier national data in West Africa to support both the public and private sector to build capacity,” she said.

Mr LIM Jung-taek, the Korea Ambassador to Ghana, said the DBMS would benefit the Ghanaian society through innovative engagements in ICT and entrepreneurship.

There was the need for Ghana to embrace the use of ICT to function more effectively because currently, ICT played a huge role in the development of a modern society, he said.

Mr Jung-taek urged all organisations to make good use of the wide range of apps, which made it easier to analyse data, to enhance their participation in digitalisation.

The new database was funded by the African Development Bank through the Korea Africa Economic Cooperation Trust Fund.

Dubbed: “Effective Power Sector Regulations through Improved Technology in Ghana,” the project is intended to build a secure, mission-critical and reliable multi-tier Database Management System, with role-based access.

It would provide front ends for processing, reporting and managing PURC operations and functions.

The project also seeks to support the establishment of a centralised DBMS for the PURC, to enable the Commission to improve its regulatory functions by improving the ability to collect, analyse and monitor data for utility regulations.
