Railway workers withdraw threat to stop passenger trains

The Ghana Railway Workers Union has suspended its intention to stop the two passenger train services on the Accra to Tema and Kojokrom via Sekondi to Takoradi rail lines.

The decision follows a successful meeting between officials of the Ministry of Railways Development, the Ghana Railway Company Limited and the Workers Union.

The Workers Union had in an earlier statement, threatened to withdraw the two passenger train services.

The threat was to register its protest against the Railway Act, Act 779 which among other things, transfers assets which hitherto were under the care of the Ghana Railway Company Limited to the Ghana Railway Development Authority.

A statement said series of appeals for the Act to be reviewed yielded no desired results, and alleged that the Ghana Railway Development Authority, had taken undue advantage of the Act to perpetuate acts that were detrimental to the survival of the Ghana Railway Company Limited.

A recent meeting with players in the railway sector had, agreed that going forward the Railway Authority should clear with the Sector Ministry before embarking on any activity regarding assets under the care of the Ghana Railway Company Limited.

The meeting also agreed that under no circumstance should any agency under the Ministry sell scraps metal without the express approval of the Ministry.

The statement signed by the General Secretary of the Railway Workers Union, Godwill Ntarmah said the Union finds the agreements at the meeting satisfactory and as such withdraws its intention to stop the running of the two passenger trains from 22 August 2022 as earlier indicated.
