The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has pledged government’s support in the setting up of a research library in the Ga community. He said this will preserve the culture and language of the indigenes.

He made the pledge at a Homowo lecture organised by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Osu District.

Speaking at the lecture, Dean of Accredited Studies, Akrofi-Christaller Institute of Theology, Mission and Culture, Reverend Professor Philip Laryea, expressed worry about the gradual decline in the teaching of the Ga language in Senior High schools.

Dean of Accredited Studies, Akrofi-Christaller Institute of Theology, Mission and Culture, Reverend Professor Philip Laryea, expressed the need for the people of the Ga State to take pragmatic steps to preserve the language.

He said there is the need to organise competitions to encourage students to write the language, the learning and teaching of the language online, and the setting up of libraries so that people can go there to educate themselves on the language.

He bemoaned the spate at which the Ga language has been neglected in Senior High Schools. He said Ga communities should give seriousness to this issue.

Professor Laryea expressed his disappointment at the rate at which most graduates from the faculty of Ghanaian Languages end up teaching English instead of Ga, due to market demand.

‘’Most of these graduates are also posted to places only to face other languages, which becomes a barrier to them,” he stated.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey noted, “it is about time Ga Dangme indigenes stood for their rights in preserving their culture and language’’.”We are using modern methods in teaching the language and setting up a research centre to bring the collection together, so people can go to these places to study the language.”

The lecture was organised as part of the Homowo festivities of the people of Ga Mashie. It was on the theme, “The Ga Language: God’s Divine gift to the Ga people”.
