CHPS Compounds for residents of Kpeve Tornu and Hove Alavanyo in Volta region

The Deputy Minister of Health, Mr. Mahama Asei Seini and the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ghana, Mr. Lim Jung-taek, have jointly commissioned two Community-Based Health Planning and Service (CHPS) Compounds for Kpeve Tornu and Hove Alavanyo in the Afadzato South District of the volta region. The facilities at a cost of more than $1.5 million was funded by the Korean Government through the Koran Foundation for International Healthcare, KOFIH.

Access to basic and primary healthcare at Kpeve Tornu and Hove Alavanyo in the Afadzato South District of the Volta Region was a challenge. People had to travel over long distances to access Basic and Primary Health Care. This according to the residents of the two communities resulted in the loss of lives in some instances.

The Volta Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Timothy Letsa, said Ghana has been enjoying enormous assistance from the Korean Government, especially in the area of Healthcare. According to him, Since 2014, the Republic of Korea through the Korean Foundation for International Healthcare, KOFIH, has been assisting Ghana’s Healthcare Delivery, especially in the areas of Maternal and Child Health through the provision of infrastructure and capacity building. He noted that Government alone cannot shoulder the provision of quality healthcare delivery and commended KOFIH for the kind gesture.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ghana, Mr. Lim Jung-Taek, said the provision of the two Community-Based Health Planning and Service, (CHPS) Compounds for Kpeve Tornu and Hove Alavanyo in the Afadzato South district of the Volta Region were in response to stakeholder engagements on the need to prioritize Healthcare Delivery in hard to reach and Island Communities. Mr Jung-taek noted that the Korean Government places high premium on assisting Ghana to improve access to quality Basic Healthcare.

The Acting Director in Charge of Institutional Care Division at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Lawrence Ofosu-Boadu, urged the benefiary Communities to own the facility and ensure good maintenance culture to prolong the life span of the facilities.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Mr. Mahama Asei Seini, said government appreciates the support from the Korean Government towards helping the country to achieve a Universal Healthcare Coverage.

The cost of the two facilities is estimated more than GHC1.5 Million and was funded by the Korean Foundation for International Healthcare, KOFIH. The facilities consist of a health structure with an attached accommodation for staff.
