As part of the measures to ensure safety on the roads, the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), will soon start engaging with stakeholders in the Transport Sector to start collecting basic data of passengers who board their vehicles.

This will help identify accident victims and trace family members should the untoward happen.

The initiative comes after two fatal road crashes were recorded on Friday at Kintampo in the Bono East Region which claimed about 60 lives and another at Ekumfi Dunkwa on the Winneba-Cape Coast Highway claiming six lives.

Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, the Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission,  May Obiri Yeboah said the initiative is long overdue.

Meanwhile, the National Road Safety Commission says it can only bite when it is given an authority status.

This way the Commission will ensure that it enforce the standards of Road Safety.

Chief Executive of the Commission, May Obiri-Yeboah at a media briefing in Accra explained that all its current powers remain persuasive as it was set up to carry out road Safety Education and Advocacy.

May Obiri Yeboah said Cabinet has already granted approval of the Memorandum to transform the Commission into to an Authority. The Commission will carry out its mandate fully.
