The people of Nintin in the Mampong Municipality of Ashanti now have potable water supply source, thanks to charity of the Rotary Club of Kumasi East.
It is a mechanized borehole that costs the Club thousands of Ghana Cedis at no cost to the people as part of its humanitarian services to needy communities.
Access to potable water supply has been a major socio-economic problem for the chiefs and people of Nintin. The community, which used to depend on streams and springs for centuries, has in past decades, suffered a lack of the essential resource due to various factors including changes in the climate and farming activities.
A drainage system created during the construction of the Main Kumasi-Mampong highway and directed into the stream after which the town, Nintin, takes its name, has completely destroyed that water source, thereby compounding the problem.
For some years now, the residents have been spending their meagre income from petty trading and subsistence farming to buy water from Mampong and other communities.
Many teachers posted to schools in the town in the past refused to take up their posts while lateness, absenteeism and unsatisfactory academic performances of the school children have been some of the effects of the acute water supply challenge situation.
Data from the Municipal Health directorate and the local clinic have also pointed to water borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid as some of the health problems linked to the water problem.
The chiefs and people of Nintin therefore see the new water system as a big relief.
A Retired Deputy Director of Education, Nana Adu Asare, who chaired the inauguration and handing over, called on residents of Nintin to commit themselves to the sustainability of the project to encourage Rotary Club of Kumasi East to do more for them and other communities in need of their service. He charged particularly teaches of the local Junior High School to keep an eye on the children to ensure nobody tampers unsupervised to damage it.
The Assembly Member for the Nintin Electoral Area, Nicholas Osei-Wusu, expressed profound gratitude to the Kumasi-East district of the Rotary Club for accepting his appeal to provide the reliable water system.
He however appealed to Rotary Club to help provide the three basic schools in the town with places of convenience to prevent any possible outbreak of diseases among the children and their teachers.
“None of the three schools here has a place of convenience. We need to help the staff and pupils in these schools with toilet facilities. I plead with Rotary Club to add this request to what you have provided us with. I’m very hopeful that, very soon, they would get household toilet facilities since I’ve been working at it at it”, Hon. Osei-Wusu appealed to Rotary Club.
The out-going President of the Rotary Club of Kumasi-East, Madam Gina Akosua Acheampong, explained that the project is entirely a humanitarian gesture devoid of any favouritism and linked to a GTV news item that touched the hearts of the leaders which also coincides with the 36th anniversary of the Kumasi-East District.
“This water project is part of our core objectives, which is Water and Sanitation. So we when this issue came to out attention in 2023, we took it serious. Even though it has taken a long time to fulfil this promise such that, we even thought the problem had been solved, but it’s believed that, God wanted Rotary Club to help you. This project comes comes at a time the Club is commemorating its 36 years as Rotary Club of Kumasi East’, Rotarian Akosua Acheampong said.
The queenmother of Ninting, Nana Anoswa, thanked Rotary Club of Kumasi East for helping solve a major socio-economic burden of the town.
She said, “you’ve relieved us of one of our serious burdens. We’ve been going through this problem for a long time and I beseech divine blessings for you for this charity.”
The Club complemented the water project with the donation of assorted educational materials worth thousands of Ghana Cedis for distribution among children and the basic schools in the town.
The items were made up of exercise books, mathematical sets, boxes of pens as well as pencils.
