Two men were left in critical condition after a brutal attack at Sabon Zango, Kumasi, on October 16, 2021, amid allegations of being in a same-sex relationship.

The victims, identified as Shaibu Inuwa, a photographer for the online news outlet Fernil News, and his alleged partner, Ziawl-haq, were reportedly assaulted by community members who accused them of engaging in homosexuality.

According to eyewitnesses, the pair had been under surveillance by local community watch members, who viewed their relationship as unacceptable within the predominantly Muslim community.

Ziawl-haq was accused of associating with an LGBTQ+ organisation, while Shaibu was alleged to be gay and a negative influence on local youth.

Community leaders had reportedly scrutinised Shaibu, 31, and Ziawl-haq for years due to suspicions about their sexual orientation.

Islam strongly condemns same-sex relationships, and individuals suspected of such behaviour in Ghana often face severe discrimination and violence.

The Chief Imam of the Sabon Zango community, Alhaji Suleiman Mahmoud, stated that he had received reports alleging that Shaibu had engaged in illicit relationships with local teenagers. However, no official charges were made against the victims before the attack.

Ghana has faced growing scrutiny over its treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals. Earlier this year, authorities shut down an LGBTQ+ community centre in Accra following pressure from government officials and religious groups.

The centre, which had opened in January as a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals, quickly became the target of threats and harassment.
