Over the years, sanitation in Ghana has become a very sensitive and topical issue. Whiles many believe that the attitudes of the citizenry can be attributed to the high rate of poor sanitation, many also believe the State has failed in handling issues on sanitation which include strict enforcement of national and local environmental laws and regulations.

With a growing population of over 30 million people, Ghana is considered one of the fasted growing economies in the world and one of the most urbanised countries in Africa.

The associated challenges caused by rapid urbanization include sanitation, which has a massive knock-on effect on the population’s health, dignity and economic growth.

It is estimated that Sub-Saharan Africa loses around 5 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) due to ill-health because of poor water and sanitation – more than the total value of aid these countries receive (TEARFUND 2008).

Studies have shown that investments in sustainable sanitation in developing regions brings a return in the range of US$5 to US$46 (depending on the intervention) for every US$1 invested (LUETHI et al. 2009). It is also estimated that poor sanitation cost the country USD 290 Million annually.

This amount is equivalent to USD12 per person per year which translates to 1.6% of the national GDP.

Discussing and delving into promoting a National Sanitation Campaign in relation to meeting the and meeting the sanitation aspirations of the country, particularly, Sustainable Development Goal 6, the Minister for Sanitation, madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah will at the 6th National Policy Summit present a comprehensive road map on what strategies her ministry has adopted to aggressively address the myriad of sanitation challenges to save the environment.

The Summit to be held at the University of Cape-Coast from Sunday May 26 and Monday 27, 2019 will discuss also, ways of preventing sanitation related flooding.
