Security analyst and consultant, Richard Kumadoe, says the safety of Ghanaians living abroad or travelling to countries such as Burkina Faso is the responsibility of host authorities.

Mr. Kumadoe’s comments follow confirmation by the Government of Ghana of a terrorist attack on a truck transporting Ghanaian tomato traders in northern Burkina Faso.

He stressed that incidents such as the attack on Ghanaian tomato traders highlight the importance of Ghana maintaining diplomatic representation in neighbouring countries.

Speaking on Onua FM on February 16, Mr. Kumadoe emphasised that when Ghanaian citizens travel abroad, their country’s embassy serves as the first point of contact in times of distress.

“As a Ghanaian, whenever you travel to another country, your first point of contact is supposed to be your embassy,” he stated.

He explained that embassies are not merely symbolic institutions but serve critical roles in ensuring safety, providing security guidance, and safeguarding the welfare of citizens abroad.

“The embassies are not just there; they are there for security and risk guidance. They engage local authorities and provide direction to citizens, especially in high-risk areas,” the security analyst added.

The attack has renewed concerns about the security situation in parts of northern Burkina Faso, where extremist activities have been reported in recent years.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including possible casualties and injuries, are yet to be officially confirmed.

According to information from Burkina Faso, the traders were travelling through the town of Titao on Saturday, February 14, 2026, when their vehicle came under attack.

In response, Ghana’s embassy in Burkina Faso says it has begun engaging local authorities to obtain detailed information.

In a statement issued on Sunday, February 15, 2026, the embassy said it is coordinating efforts to visit the attack site to ascertain the identities and condition of any Ghanaians involved.

Officials further assured that steps are being taken to establish the facts and provide the necessary support to affected individuals and their families.
