Member of the NPP Legal Team, Enoch Afoakwah Esq., has stated that former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, still has the legal right to challenge her conviction despite missing the deadline for filing an appeal.
Speaking in an interview on GTV’s Current Agenda programme on Saturday, June 13, 2026, Mr. Afoakwah explained that under Ghanaian law, Sedinam Tamakloe can apply to the court for an extension of time to appeal her conviction and sentence.
According to him, although the period prescribed by law for filing an appeal has elapsed, the legal system provides an avenue for individuals in such circumstances to seek the court’s permission to proceed with an appeal.
“Under the law, she still has the right to appeal. Although the time to file her appeal has elapsed, she can apply to the court for an extension of time within which to file her appeal,” he said.
Mr. Afoakwah noted that the right to appeal is an important aspect of Ghana’s justice system, as it allows convicted persons to seek a review of court decisions where they believe there are grounds to do so.
He also emphasised that Sedina Tamakloe’s recent extradition from the United States to Ghana to serve her 10-year prison sentence does not automatically deprive her of her legal rights under the Constitution and the laws of Ghana.
The legal practitioner explained that any application for an extension of time would be considered by the court, which would determine whether sufficient grounds exist to grant the request.
Sedina Tamakloe Attionu was convicted in absentia and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in connection with the misappropriation of public funds during her tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).
She was recently extradited from the United States to Ghana after a lengthy legal process.
