Senegal impounds cocaine en route to Ghana; tasks gov’ts to step up anti-drug campaigns

Authorities in Senegal last week seized 238 kilos of cocaine concealed in new vehicles on a boat at the Port of Dakar. The boat arrived from the port of Paranagua, Brazil.

Reports say the cocaine was packed in travel bags, hidden in 15 new cars at the Port and were destined for Ghana and Germany.

Authorities say investigations are underway to identify persons behind it. Local media however report that a foreign couple are among those detained for interrogation.

Speaking to the BBC, Dr. Kwesi Anning, of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre attributed the influx of the drug trade in West Africa to both state and non state actors.

He challenged governments to step up their anti drug activities to curtail the menace which is gradually eroding political and economic gains made in the last decade.
