Upper West Regional Minister Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan has hinted that the region will hold a forum to discuss how best to curb the illegal felling of rosewood in the region.

He said even though the Regional Security Council has banned the practice, it still goes on with the connivance of some traditional rulers, merchants, assembly members and security agencies.

The Regional Minister was responding to concerns raised by people of the Sissala East Municipality at a Town Hall Meeting organized by the Ministry of Information in collaboration with the Municipal Assembly.

He said everyone has a role to play in stopping the illegal practice because its consequences go beyond the current generation.

The Regional Minister appealed to the Chiefs to consider stripping any traditional ruler who connives with merchants to fell rosewood trees in the region of the position.

He said such a decision will serve as a deterrent to traditional rulers who condone with merchants to devastate the region’s fast depleting environment.
