The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed the tragic drowning of a six-year-old boy at Kasoa Wallantu in the Central Region, renewing calls for stricter safety measures around water storage facilities in residential homes.
In a press statement issued on Monday, December 29, 2025, and signed by the Divisional Officer Two (DO II) and Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Service disclosed that the incident occurred at a compound house located at House Number CB 180.
The deceased child identified as Godfred Aboagye, reportedly drowned in an uncovered water storage tank within the compound.
According to the statement, GNFS received a distress call at about 5:03 p.m. prompting the immediate dispatch of a rescue team to the scene. The team arrived within ten minutes, at 5:13 p.m., but found that the child had already drowned in the open tank.

Rescue operations were promptly undertaken and concluded at approximately 5:28 p.m. (1728 hours). The body of the child was retrieved and handed over to the Police at the scene for preservation and further investigations.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the boy was playing with a ball which accidentally fell into the uncovered tank. In an attempt to retrieve the ball, he entered the tank and sadly drowned.
The Ghana National Fire Service expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and used the unfortunate incident to caution parents, guardians, and property owners to be vigilant about child safety. The Service emphasized the need to securely cover all water storage facilities, including tanks, wells, and pits, particularly in homes where children are present.
GNFS reaffirmed its commitment to public safety education and drowning prevention, urging the public to promptly report emergencies through the toll-free emergency numbers 112, 0201500360, or 0302772446 to enable swift response.
