SMEC International has supported, assisted and represented MiDA by assuming full responsibility for the management of portions of the Ghana Power Compact Program.

This follows the identification of Ghana’s power sector as constituting binding constraints to the growth of the national economy.

Mr Jose Fernandes (Regional Manager, SMEC).

The Compact, funded by the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), seeks to address persistent high load growth and limited addition of generation capacity challenges by creating an enabling environment for private investment in additional generation.

It also enhances the governance and regulatory environment of the Power Sector and strengthens the corporate governance, operational efficiency and financial viability of the power distribution utilities.

Speaking at a golf event at Achimota, Engineer of the SMEC Ghana, Munesu Dizamuhupe, said the Power Compact was to solve issues.

“The Power Compact was put up by the government in conjunction with the MCC to help the power sector in Ghana to solve certain issues—technical losses in the transmission system and non-technical losses like power theft, etc. Most of the projects we implemented were all tailor-made to solve these solutions.”

“We, first of all, put in two bulk supply points so as to inject power sources that are a major contributor to using technical losses which means we are bringing power closer to the distribution services,” he explained on Saturday, June 4.

“There are big projects which we implemented to reduce technical losses. We were aiming at reducing the length of distribution lines to make them shorter by putting in more transformers closer to people.”

“In terms of solving non-technical losses, there were two things that we put in—a geographical system and meter management system,” he added.

SMEC’s services under the compact project included general program management, design preparation, provision of specified services, assistance with required procurements, management and supervision of works, project oversight for services-related assignment and program close-out support.

The infrastructure projects developed under the Compact were the Kasoa and Pokuase Bulk Supply Points and associated Interconnecting lines, Low Voltage Feeder Bifurcation and network improvement for 5 Districts within Accra, High Voltage Distribution System and Security Lighting for 10 markets within Accra and Tamale, installation of Meter Management Systems (MMS), Implementation of Utility Geographic Information Systems (GIS), AC Test Building and with installed Refrigerator Test Laboratory, and Primary Substation and Interconnecting Circuit at the University of Ghana and Kanda.
