Help stop the smuggling of gold- Mireku Duker

Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources George Mireku Duker has called for support from those in the gold production value chain to help stop the smuggling of gold to neighbouring countries. Inaugurating the Ellembelle District Mining Committee in the Western Region, Mr Mireku Duker said, ”small miners contribute substantial amounts to the production of gold in the country. However, some smuggle the gold out to sell in neighbouring countries”.

He, therefore, charged the Committee to monitor the production and sale of the commodity.

The Deputy Minister said the essence of the Community Mining introduced by the government is to make those in the small-scale mining sector mine responsibly and make it attractive. He said the intent of the government is to deliberately grow indigenous small-scale mining into big multilateral companies.

Mr. Mireku Duker warned that ”no foreigner should engage in small-scale mining which is totally reserved for Ghanaians”. He noted that to help grow the local small-scale industry government through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has negotiated with some banks to assist small-scale mining companies acquire the needed facilities to grow their industry.

Chairman of the Ellembelle District Small Scale Mining Committee, Kwasi Bonzoh on behalf of the members pledged to work to justify the confidence reposed in them.

He said small scale illegal is a real challenge which concerns everybody. He said If they failed on the mandate bestow on them by ensuring responsible mining the river bodies which is their main source of water will be destroyed and dire consequences is to import water which is not an option.
