Founder of the Medical Excellence Awards, Dr. Dauda Amidu Titus, has accused some individuals and groups of deliberately undermining the credibility of the awards scheme.

Dr. Amidu failed to name the individuals or groups but attributed the situation to resistance of attempts to influence the scheme and award undeserving health workers.

Speaking at the launch of this year’s Medical Excellence Awards in Accra, Dr. Amidu revealed that a new category has been created to recognize the health personnel who were involved in contact tracing of COVID-19.

Dr. Dauda Amidu, touted the credibility of Medical Excellence Awards scheme due to the rigorous process of selecting the awardees. He said investigators go to the health institutions where health workers have been nominated, disguised as patients to examine whether the nominations are based on merit.

He said the awards scheme has chalked up some achievements notably, championing the change of name from Mortuary men to transition managers.

According to Dr. Dauda Amidu, the reputation of Organisers of the awards scheme is being tarnished because of their refusal to award undeserving health workers with influence.

“People have decided to tarnish what we are doing…one ministry wrote to us telling us that they have the same awards we are organising so we should stop ours.”

Dr. Amidu highlighted some of the awards criteria including a new category for health personnel who were involved in contact tracing. The awards ceremony comes off on November 27 with a focus on Quality Healthcare delivery, a concern for all.
