Traders at the Slaha market in Accra have called on government to expedite work on the reconstruction of the market else risk losing their votes.

The women say sales have dropped drastically since the demolition of the market four years ago with a promise to reconstruct an ultra-modern market in its stead.

GBC’s Nathaniel Nartey who visited the market reports that although reconstruction of the market is in progress, it is at a slow pace.

Four years after sod-cutting, the Slaha market has seen no facelift. The market is still in a dilapidated state as traders have been left with no option than to operate along the streets of the old market.

This has created heavy vehicular traffic with gutters surrounding the market getting choked with the slightest downpour.

The area marked for the reconstruction has been fenced with aluminum roofing sheets.

GBC’s Radio Ghana spotted three workers on site doing mild hammering and chiseling. A market woman in an interview said the prolonged delay in the reconstruction has led to some buyers believing that the market does not exist anymore which has affected their sales

The Slaha Market is one of the major trading hubs in the Accra Metropolis which accommodates over 400 traders. It is estimated that the proposed ultra-modern market would accommodate about a thousand traders upon completion.
