Vehicular congestion around Spintex to ease by December

By Roselyn Ganyaglo

Vehicular congestion in and around Spintex and East Legon in Accra will soon be a thing of the past as works on the flyover over the motorway is forty-seven percent complete and expected to be handed over by the end of this year.

Upon completion, pedestrian safety will be improved, as well as reduction in risk of accidents. These came up during an inspection of the project by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta who tasked the contractors to ensure that congestion is minimized, especially during peak periods, “I have directed the contractors to employ best traffic management practices,” he indicated.

The flyover project involves the creation of access from the motorway to the boundary road roundabout and an exit into Cantonments from the Giffard road interchange. It consists of one mainline bridge, two ramp bridges, four auxiliary roads, and ancillary works. The Minister said the project is important but comes with inconveniences. He appealed to the public to be a bit tolerant and bear with the contractors.

The Resident Engineer, Emmanuel Degbotse who took the media through the progress of work, said there hasn’t been any major challenge so far.

He emphasized that the legal height limit of four-point-five meters for trucks will be strictly enforced, “Any truck which exceeds the minimum of 4.5 meters will be asked to go back,” he explained.

The Minister who earlier visited the Borteyman School Junction project expressed satisfaction at the progress of work.

He reiterated the ministry’s unwavering dedication to improving road infrastructure in the country through road maintenance work. “With road maintenance as a permanent feature, there are systems in place to fix deteriorating road conditions, especially during the rainy season,”  he said.

Touching on tolling, Mr. Amoako Atta said the system has not been abolished and that at the appropriate time, it will be re-introduced.
