State Funeral Service for Late Prof Atukwei-Okai held

A State Funeral and Burial Service has been held for renowned Poet and Former Secretary-General of the Pan African Writers Association PAWA, Professor Atukwei Okai, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The Body was laid in State for file past before the Service started at 9:00am.

The ceremony which was attended by hundreds of people and dignitaries across the continent was witnessed by President Akufo Addo and two former Ghanaian Presidents, Jerry John Rawlings and John Mahama.

In a tribute, his Wife, Beatrice, described the late Atukwei as a hard-working, principled and one who encouraged everyone along the way.

His children described him as unique, because he sought the welfare not only the family but others.
His remains were laid to rest at the Military Cemetery in Burma Camp, followed by Final Funeral rites at the Forecourt of the State House.

Professor Atukwei-Okai, a former Greater Accra Regional Secretary loved Poetry, was a cultural Activist and Academic. He is generally acknowledged to be the first real performance Poet to emerge in Africa.

A thanksgiving Service  will be held for him on Sunday, September 16, 2018, 10:00 am  at the Accra Ridge Church. A statement from the Family said the Dress code is all White.
He was  survived by a wife and five children.
