Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has assured the family of a Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Ahyia, of the government’s commitment to pursuing justice following his death in Latvia.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Ablakwa said he invited the bereaved family to a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra on Monday, December 22, 2025, where he formally conveyed the government’s condolences and briefed them on steps taken so far.

He disclosed that the Ministry promptly dispatched a fact-finding mission from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany, which holds concurrent accreditation to Latvia, to gather information on the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to the Minister, the team has since submitted a preliminary report to the Ministry.

The Foreign Affairs Minister said Latvian authorities have officially confirmed that investigations into the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia are still ongoing and have not been concluded. In a further demonstration of government’s resolve, Mr. Ablakwa announced that he has formally notified the Latvian government of his decision to travel to Latvia to engage his counterpart and the investigators handling the case. He revealed that the planned delegation will include representatives of Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family.

Mr. Ablakwa also indicated that the government will engage independent experts to analyse all investigative reports, particularly the expected final report from Latvian authorities, to guide the country’s next steps in the interest of justice.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Ghanaians abroad and ensuring accountability in cases involving Ghanaian citizens overseas, stressing that the state will pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.
