Supreme Court nominee Justice Agnes Mercy Dordzie, is recommending the speedy implementation and funding of the ‘Electronic Justice Programme’ for quick adjudication in the country’s law courts.

She was answering questions on delays in judicial processes and related matters in the justice system when she appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

Before her appointment, Justice Agnes Mercy Abla Dordzie had served as an Appeals Court Judge for many years. She also served in many magistrate courts in most parts of the country and Africa, including Nigeria and The Gambia.

Calmly, she responded to questions on the equitable distribution of marital properties, the abolition of the death penalty and the decentralisation of the High courts.

On the length of time used to adjudicate divorce cases, Justice Dordzie called for separate courts to cut down on the delay.

While expressing regret at the lack of adequate Legal Aid lawyers, she suggested that new lawyers take up pro bono cases at the board as part of their service to the country. She expressed her views about perceived corruption in the judiciary.

Justice Dordzie also suggested the passing of a law to spell out exactly how property acquired by a couple should be shared in the event of a divorce.

She said even though she is a Christian, her religious background does not affect her work as a judge.  She was quick to add that her judicial philosophy will always remain fairness and justice.
