Corn millers in parts of Tamale embarked on a strike to force through new charges. The corn mill operators, who have since returned to work, have increased their charges by at least thirty percent.

A paint container of maize, which used to go for GH¢2.00, is now GH¢3.00.

The millers, locally called ‘nika nika’ or ‘manika’ turned away most residents who were not ready to pay the new price.

A resident of Nyohini who gave her name as Afishetu, said her maize started going bad after three days, due to the strike by the millers.

According to one corn mill operator, Baba Musah, an increase in electricity tariffs and the cost of spare parts are challenges for them.

Though residents are not happy about the development, they said they have no choice but to pay the new charges.
