The Ghana Water Company Limited and the Tano Basin Secretariat in Sunyani have refuted claims that the Tano River has been poisoned or polluted.
Yesterday, an articulated truck carrying chemicals suspected to be cyanide fell into the Tano River which is said to have resulted in the deaths of several aquatic animals including fishes and crocodiles.
In an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana in Sunyani, the Regional Chief Manager of the Ghana Water Company,  Abraham Adjei Kwarteng stressed that the Tano Water is safe for drinking, and called on the public to be calm as they are working hard to safeguard public safety.
NADMO in a statement signed by the Offinso District Director, Elijah Mamos, explained that the Tano River has been polluted and not safe for drinking until further notice.
According to him, this is due to an accident involving an articulated truck which was carrying about 2500 gallons of Sulphuric acid, some of which was washed into the river, resulting in the killing of some aquatic animals.
But reacting to this in an interview with Radio Ghana in Sunyani, the Senior Basin Officer at the Tano Basin Secretariat of the Water Resources Commission, Solomon Danso Ankama said the Tano River has not in anyway been polluted since the PH level of the water is normal.
He added that the statement that the Tano River was polluted had no scientific basis and was not backed by the requisite tests of the water.
For his part the Regional Chief Officer at the Ghana Water Company, Abraham Adjei Kwarteng also stated emphatically that the Tano River is clean and safe for public consumption as the Ghana water is on the ground monitoring the situation.
As at the time of our visit to the Tano Basin Secretariat and Ghana Water Company Limited in Sunyani, reports from the various stations along the Tano River indicated that the PH Level of the Tano River was within 6.5 to 7 which according to them is good news.
