Workers at the various Toll booths today went on a demonstration in protest against the abolishing of road tolls. The toll workers which include persons with disabilities and hawkers are expected to present a petition to Parliament as the House resumes proceedings today.
The Toll Workers who have cast doubt on the feasibility of Government reassigning them say the Government owes them up to four months’ salary arrears. Meanwhile, Chairman of the National Advisory Committee of the Federation of Disability Organisation , Alexander Williams said the Federation has not sanctioned any demonstration for its members.
“The rumour we heard was that those involved in toll collection including PWDs are to demonstrate against the government’s new directive to remove road tolls. We have had no formal communication on this matter but it is not a matter that the Federation has sanctioned”.
Secretary to the Toll Booth Workers, Ella Ametor said the Federation has not been of help to its members in crucial times.
The revenue from toll collection that they have been mentioning, we can tell you for a fact that it is never true……We think the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisation who claims to be our mother Association is not up to task..we have reported series of issues to them for them to work on but nothing is being done about it so members will not be happy. If you ask every PWD working at the toll booths you will hear what they have to say about the Federation”.
