Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako Atta, has described the level of destruction on the portion of the road leading to the Sandema Township, capital of the Builsa North Municipality as dangerous.
The Minister made the observation when he paid a working visit to the Builsa North Municipality of the Upper East Region to inspect the extent of damage caused by the recent floods in the area.
Sandema township is lying in a low-land area. This explains why the township is always flooded whenever there is a heavy downpour. Most of the roads linking the township are currently unmotorable due to torrential rains.
Even though some of the roads that were washed away in 2015 and 2016 have been awarded on contract, contractors who were on site before the 2020 elections left site immediately after the elections claiming that government has not been able to pay them.
Speaking with GBC NEWS, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr. Kwesi Amoako Atta, underscored the need for the road leading to Sandema Township to be widened.
He said the historic mahogany trees along the road will be cut off to solve the perennial flooding in the area.
Mr. Amoako Atta said the chiefs and people in the area and the technical team from the Ministry will be engaged to discuss the necessity to cut down some of the trees.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, assured the people in the region of government’s resolve to address their concerns.
Some residents described the behaviour of almost all the contractors in the region who move to site whenever President, Vice President or a sector minister is paying a working visit to the region and abandon site immediately after the visit as unacceptable.
