The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have formally requested a review of public transport fares from the Ministry of Transport.
In a joint statement on Thursday, September 3, 2026, the two transport groups said the request was made in line with the Administrative Instrument that guides the determination and review of public transport fares.
They explained that the review process considers various factors affecting the operations of commercial road transport services.
The groups said discussions with the Ministry of Transport will begin soon and urged drivers, station masters, transport owners and the general public to remain calm while the process is ongoing.
They added that the outcome of the consultations will be communicated to the public once the process is completed.
The request comes after a marginal increase in petroleum prices from Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
Petrol is currently selling at GH¢16.21 per litre, up from a previous average pump price of GH¢15.43, representing an estimated five per cent increase.
Diesel has also increased to about GH¢17.61 per litre, from GH¢17.17, representing a 2.58 per cent rise.
The proposed fare review could therefore affect the cost of public transportation if the consultations result in an approved adjustment.
