United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA‘s Executive Director, Dr. Natalia Kanem says they are extremely concerned about reports of a global shortage of condoms.

In an interview with journalists, Dr. Kanem said the shortage of condoms is particularly a concern because of the high risk of transmission of HIV and AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases, STD’samidst COVID 19.

Last month, reports emerged that the world’s biggest producer of condoms announced a looming shortage after a coronavirus lockdown forced it to shut down production.

Malaysia’s Karex Bhd makes one in every five condoms globally. It has not produced a single condom in its three Malaysian factories for more than a week since March because of a lockdown imposed by the government to halt spread of the virus.

Which means already there is a shortfall of 100million condoms, normally marketed internationally and supplied to state healthcare systems, or distributed by aid programs such as the UN Population Fund.
