A gory accident which occurred in-between Kintampo and Babatokoma in the Kintampo North Municipality of the Bono East Region last night has claimed 23 lives.
While 21 of the victims died on the spot, two others died at the Kintampo Government Hospital where the injured were rushed for medical attention.
GBC NEWS gathered that the accident involved a Yendi-Kumasi bound Grandbird bus with registration number AS 4635-22 and a truck with registration number GW 1127-P.
Residents of the area told GBC NEWS that the accident occurred at about 11 pm.
According to them, the articulated truck veered off its lane into the lane of the bus in an attempt to avoid crashing into another car which was parked on the road. In the event, the bus crashed into the articulated truck killing the 22 people and injuring many others.
The bodies have been deposited at the morgue of the Kintampo Government Hospital while the injured are also receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The drivers of the two vehicles who are said to have survived the accident are currently in police custody.
The Bono East Regional Minister, Kwasi Adu-Gyan has visited the accident scene to assess the situation.
Speaking to GBC NEWS on the incident, he expressed concern about the rampant accidents on that stretch of the Kintampo-Tamale highway.
Mr. Adu-Gyan called for the need to institute a compulsory rest stop at Kintampo to compel long distance drivers to rest to forestall such incidents.
He added that already the Bono East Regional Coordinating Council, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Ghana Shippers Council are in talks to institute such a measure.
