The Upper West Regional Police Command is asking the public to help it identify and apprehend some persons suspected to be armed robbers.

The Police Command said the public should be on high alert for persons in their communities who may be looking for health care for gunshot wounds.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Affairs Officer of the Upper West Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Gideon Ohene-Boateng.

“On 1st October, 2021 at about 1100hrs, [the Police Command] gathered that three armed men were hiding in a bush at Varempere, a village near Wechau in the Wa West District preparing to rob commuters on the Wa-Wechiau road”.

Acting on the intelligence gathered, the Upper West Regional Commander, ACP Peter Ndekugri dispatched men from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) to go to the scene and verify the information gathered.

The statement indicated that while the men from SWAT approached the scene, the suspected robbers began to fire at the policemen.

“The armed men opened gun shots on the police and police returned the gun shots. The 3-armed men who were also firing an AK 47 rifle managed to escape. They left behind Thirty-nine (39) Live AK 47 ammunitions, one single barrel shotgun West with four live AA cartridges, two APSONIC motorbikes with registration numbers M-21-NR 5052 and M-21-NR 9505 with their ignition keys, one Techno Pop 4 cell phone, one Techno spark 5 cell phone, a dagger, a backpack,” the statement said.

The statement said messages have been relayed to all surrounding villages, including Assembly Members, all medical facilities and herbal centers to be on the lookout and inform the Police of anyone who reports there with fresh injuries, especially gunshot injuries.

“The local radio stations have also been informed to relay the message to their listeners”, it stated.
