Upper West Regional House of Chiefs elects new leaders

The Upper West Regional House of Chiefs has elected new leaders to lead the House and also represent the Regional House of Chiefs at the National level. All seven positions were contested unopposed.

According to the Upper West Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Ali Osman, per the rules of elections, when positions are contested unopposed, the persons contesting automatically win the said positions.

Mr Osman thus named the Daffiama Naa, Naa Dikomwine Domalae as the new President of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs. He is to be assisted by the Lawra Naa, Naa Pouwele Karbo as his Vice President.

Every four years, the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs is to elect executives to lead the house.

At this year’s election, the Tumu Kuoro, Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton, the Gwollu Kouro, Kuoro Limann Kuri-Buktie and the Dorimon Naa, Naa Danah Sohimwinye Gore have been elected to act as representatives to the National House of Chiefs. The rest are Naa Dikomwine Domalae and Naa Pouwele Karbo.

The Outgoing President of the Upper West Regional House of Chief, Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton appealed to the house to offer its maximum support to the newly elected executives.

“At this meeting, a new leadership of the House and five members to the National House of Chiefs would be elected. Fortunately for us, our predecessors established a convention. It is through consensus building and is less stressful. The practice has held the House together because the acrimonies that go with competitive elections are absent.”

“My humble plea to members of the Upper West Region House of Chiefs and all stakeholders is that the courtesies that were extended to the current leadership will be accorded to the new leadership as well,” he said.

Kuoro Babini Kanton commended traditional rulers in the region for their role in fostering peace before the 2020 election. He called on broadcasters and journalists not to allow themselves to be used to convey destructive messages.

The new executives are to be sworn in on November 7, 2020.
