The United States Embassy in Accra has confirmed a temporary suspension of most routine consular services. This operational pause begins July 20, 2026, and continues through July 31, 2026. Officials stated the interruption is necessary to facilitate scheduled maintenance work at the embassy facilities.

The mission expects to resume standard consular activities on Monday, August 3, 2026. Embassy representatives urged the public to adjust travel and documentation schedules to accommodate this timeline. The embassy noted that it periodically delivers consular services in this manner, emphasizing that while routine operations may scale down, emergency assistance remains a priority. This scheduled pause is a standard procedure to ensure the continued functionality and safety of diplomatic infrastructure.
Impact on Specific Consular Tasks
The upcoming maintenance will affect the majority of non-emergency functions. During this two-week window, walk-in notarial services will be unavailable. Additionally, the processing and issuance of Consular Reports of Death Abroad will be halted until the facility returns to normal operations.
Provisions for Essential Services
Despite the broad suspension, the embassy has outlined specific exceptions to ensure essential needs are met. Individuals already notified by email that their U.S. passport or Consular Report of Birth Abroad is ready for collection may still retrieve their documents. These pickups are scheduled exclusively for Thursdays between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Additionally, the embassy confirmed that adult passport renewal applications submitted via the drop-box service will continue to be processed throughout the maintenance period. Emergency assistance for American citizens residing in or traveling through Ghana remains fully operational. The mission stated that “Americans requiring urgent consular support should contact the duty officer through its emergency telephone line.” Officials have advised all concerned parties to monitor the official embassy website for real-time updates regarding the restoration of full services. Those with pending matters are encouraged to plan ahead to minimize potential inconvenience before the suspension takes effect on July 20.
