US marks 243rd Independence Day In Ghana

The Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery says Ghana is ready to reinforce relations with the US and co-operate with it to bring closure to the imposed visa restrictions.

He acknowledged the continued support Ghana receives from the US Government especially with the extension of the African Growth and Opportunities Act to 2025 and the donation of 190 One hundred and ninety million dollars, ($190,000000) to Ghana under the Millennium Exchange Compact Agreement.

The Interior Minister was speaking at the 243rd US Independence Day celebration hosted by Ambassador Stephanie Sullivan at the Embassy in Accra.

GBC’s Rebecca Ekpe reports that amidst heavy security presence, it was a moment for members of the Diplomatic Corps, government representatives, business community, representatives of political parties and religious leaders among others to celebrate Ghana US relations.

Interior Minister Ambrose Dery who represented the government of Ghana expressed gratitude to the US for its continued support to Ghana in the areas of poverty alleviation, education, health, governance, peace and security among others. 

He said Ghana-US relations have been reinforced in view of the ”many bilateral visits between our countries”.

He assured Ambassador Sullivan and the Government of the US of Ghana’s readiness, ”to continue to grow bilateral relations between the two countries”.

One huge success story with regard to Ghana US relations was when Nine students from Mamfe Senior High School in the Eastern Region beat 24 other schools to win a robotics competition in Michigan, US. Ambassador Stephanie Sullivan described the feat as a proud moment, and praised them saying ”to team Acrobat, we say ayeekoo”.

She said ”elsewhere in America other Ghanaians are reaching even greater heights”.

At NASA’s Jet proportion Laboratory, Ghanaian Engineer, Dr. Ashton led the team that designed the robotics components for the inside space craft  now exploring Mars. Ambassador Sullivan said Dr. Ashton in 2011 founded the non-profit, Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation, ”the very organization that  fostered Ghana’s Eastern Region Robotics champions.

She said the US Embassy sponsored the foundation’s initial robotics chess and ”we are thrilled with the Ghanaian team’s great success”, said Ambassador Sullivan.

The 243rd US Independence day celebration also coincided with the 50th Anniversary, since American Astronaut Neil Armstrong made history by landing on the moon for the first time.

The event was themed: ”50 Years on the Moon”.

Ghana’s Interior Minister and the US Ambassador, Stephanie Sullivan toasted to the best of future relations between both governments( President Nana Akufo Addo- Ghana and US President, Donald J. Trump).
