The Public Utilities Workers’ Union (PUWU) have postponed a planned nationwide protest to demonstrate their opposition to the proposed Private Sector Participation (PSP) in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The union had planned to hold demonstrations across all its operational regions and present a petition to President John Dramani Mahama through the various regional ministers.
However, there was no gathering at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) headquarters in Accra, which was expected to serve as the assembly point for workers in the Greater Accra Region.
According to sources close to the TUC the demonstration had been postponed, following a meeting between PUWU and the Ministry of Energy which began on Monday, September 28.
The discussions are expected to continue, as the two sides seek to address concerns over the proposed private sector involvement in ECG.

PUWU had earlier directed members of its Senior Staff Union and Junior Staff Union to participate in the nationwide demonstration against the PSP arrangement.
The union is opposed to the proposed private sector role in ECG and has indicated its intention to present its concerns directly to the government.
The outcome of the ongoing discussions between PUWU and the Energy Ministry is expected to determine whether the union will reschedule the demonstration or call it off entirely.
