National Coordinator for the District Road Improvement Programme, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for nominating seven new justices to the Supreme Court, calling the decision fair and non-political.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, May 1, 2025, Vanderpuye said the nominees are experienced judges from the Court of Appeal who have no ties to any political party. He believes their selection will help rebuild public trust in Ghana’s judiciary.

“These are people who have never shown political bias or taken part in political activities,” Vanderpuye said. “That’s why their nomination is a good step. It’s how we build trust in the justice system.”

His remarks follow President Mahama’s nomination of seven Court of Appeal justices for consideration for appointment to the Supreme Court bench.

The nominees are Justices Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Senyo Dzamefe, Kweku Tawiah Ackah-Boafo, Philip Bright Mensah, Janpere Bartels-Kodwo, and Hafisata Ameleboba.

Vanderpuye added that recent public opinion reports, such as the Afrobarometer, have shown that many Ghanaians believe the judiciary is politically biased. This, he said, has reduced public confidence in the courts.

“We need to clean up the system,” Vanderpuye stressed.

“And I believe President Mahama deserves praise for choosing people who can restore public confidence and deliver fair justice.”

The nominations were made under Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution and must still be approved by Parliament.
