The Criminal Division of the Accra High Court has been shown two video recordings on what led to the death of the Major Maxwell Mahama at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region in May 2017.

The videos are part of evidence by the prosecution, to prove its case against the fourteen accused persons charged with murder.

The atmosphere of the courtroom was a sober one, where the amateur videos and photo album were shown in parts in the presence of the accused persons and their Counsel, State Prosecutors, the Jurors, media and the public.

The duration of the first video was five minutes, 20 seconds, and the second one lasted a minute and six seconds with one having slow motion effect applied to it.

The video started with some residents in the area pursuing the late Major Mahama shouting thief, thief.

The mob caught up with him and began attacking him with sticks and cement blocks. The mob hit the late soldier many times until he fell to the ground and died.

After, the prosecution again introduced a photo album on a screen which was an extract from the videos shown.

It was about to be tendered in evidence but was opposed to by the Defence Counsel.

Prior to that a Chief State Attorney, Evelyn Keelson informed the Court that the Witness, Chief Inspector Samuel Agyakwa, who is the 14th Prosecution Witness, would have to explain what happened in the video to the Court and also identify the accused persons but that was also objected to by the Defence.

A Defence Counsel, Theophilus Donkor, again raised objection that the video played contained expressions in Twi and prayed the Court to allow the said language to be transcribed to form part of the records, since the medium used in the court process is mainly English.

He said the jurors have indicated that they only understood English and nothing else.

The Court Presided over by Justice Mariama Owusu said the objections have no basis because there is a court interpreter to assist in the processes.

Chief Inspector Agyakwa identified 13 of the 14 accused persons in the video.

The military officer, died at the age of 32 while on an official duty in Denkyira Obuasi to check illegal mining.

The case continues on the 19th of this month.
