Private legal practitioner and Executive Director of Lands and Mines Watch, Kwame Owusu Danso, has urged Ghanaian youth to resist the temptation of fraud and other illegal means of making money, following the extradition of Frederick Kumi, popularly known as ‘Abu Trica‘, to the United States to face trial over alleged romance fraud.
Speaking during a panel discussion on Current Agenda, Mr Danso said although unemployment and economic hardship continue to frustrate many young people, they should not allow those challenges to push them into crime.
He argued that while Ghana’s current economic environment often appears to reward wealth over hard work, young people must remain patient and pursue legitimate opportunities.
“We have a system that does not reward hard work; I admonish the youth, however, to be measured,” Mr Danso said.
He admitted that he had, at one point in his youth, felt the temptation to engage in fraudulent activities because of the stark contrast between unemployed graduates and individuals displaying unexplained wealth online.
“I was even tempted as a young boy to go into fraud because it is painful having to sit at home doing nothing after university while others who haven’t even been to school lavish money and wealth on social media,” he said.
Mr Danso noted that Abu Trica had built a significant following on social media by frequently displaying luxury vehicles, bundles of cash and an extravagant lifestyle, which, he said, can create unrealistic expectations and influence young people to pursue quick wealth through illegal means.
He warned that while such lifestyles may appear attractive, the legal consequences can be severe and life-changing.
The comments come after Abu Trica was extradited to the United States on Thursday, July 9, 2026, to face allegations linked to an international romance fraud syndicate.
According to U.S. authorities, he was allegedly part of a criminal network that targeted mainly elderly Americans through online romance scams, defrauding victims of more than US$8 million.
Romance fraud typically involves criminals creating fake online identities to build emotional relationships with victims before manipulating them into sending money or valuables.
Reports indicate that Abu Trica’s lawyer had gone to court on the day of the extradition in an attempt to stop the process but discovered that his client had already been placed on a Delta Air Lines flight to the United States.
Mr Danso said the case should serve as a reminder that the pursuit of quick wealth through criminal activity often ends in prosecution rather than prosperity, urging young people to build their futures through hard work, integrity and lawful means.
