The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya Na Abukari has appealed to the government, benevolent individuals and organizations to come to the aid of the Yendi Municipality which is suffering from acute water shortage.

The development has affected socio-economic activities in the Municipality as residents spend hours in search of water.

The Overlord made the appeal when management of the Ghana Water Company Limited paid a courtesy call on him at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.

The Yendi Municipality has suffered perennial water shortages over the last decade. River Daka which serves as the main source of water for treatment and supply residents of the Municipality has dried up.

Currently, the Ghana Water Company Limited relies on boreholes in the Municipality for water which is then treated and distributed to residents.

The company says, it is only producing 30 percent of its demand and this has resulted in water rationing.

The Overlord of Dagbon Ya Na Abukari expressed concern over the impact of the water crisis on socio-economic activities in the area.

He is particularly worried about the impact on the Yendi Municipal hospital and the thousands of school children in the area.

He appealed to the Ghana water company limited to procure additional tankers to help ease the situation until a permanent solution is found.

The Regional Chief Manager for Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr. Amidu Musah, explained that the company has prioritized the hospital and some key institutions in the area for frequent water supply.

Mr. Amidu Musah emphasized that, human activities such as farming along the river bank have caused the siltation of River Daka. He said the company will dredge the river to boost the volume of water ahead of the impending raining season.
