Members of the WK.M Karate Do Association of the Upper West Region, led by their instructor, Kwashivi Mensah put up a spectacular display in self defence to spice up the 63rd independence anniversary parade at the Jubilee Park in Wa.

The vintage performance of the group drew applause from the spectators, with special admiration for the young members of the team for their skills and dexterity.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih who was the reviewing officer paid tribute to those who gallantly fought for our independence, saying “their sacrifice and perseverance are highly appreciated”.

He used the occasion to thank President Akufo-Addo for nominating lawyer Yoni Kulendi to the Supreme Court of Ghana, adding that, “the gesture demonstrates the President’s love and affection for Upper West.”

Dr. Bin Salih indicated that the chiefs and people of Upper West highly appreciate the gesture because this is the first time an Upper Westerner has been nominated to serve at the apex court of the land.

The Regional Minister was hopeful that lawyer Yoni Kulendi who is a man of integrity will live up to the expectation of the good people of Ghana.

Touching on education, Dr. Bin Salih said: “all is set for the appointment of an interim governing council to handle the affairs of the S.D. Dombo University for Business and Integrated Development Studies and the conversion of the Hilla Limann Polytechnic to a fully-fledged Technical University.”

The move, he stated, is to help absorb the products of the Free Senior High School policy.

The Governor of the Southwest Region of Burkina Faso, Colonel Nitiema Tagsseba who led a delegation from his country for the anniversary, stressed the need for a united front to fight terrorism and insecurity in Upper West and Burkina Faso.

The parade was under the command of ASP Adongo Apiiya of the Ghana Police Service.

Some schools were honoured for their outstanding performance during the march past. For the primary category, Tupaso Primary School of Excellence came first whilst at the Junior High School (JHS) level, Falahia Islamic JHS was the adjudged the best.

Wa Technical Institute was the best performing school among the Senior High Schools. For the cadet corps, Wa Senior High Technical was the winner.

Among the special Schools, the School for the Blind had the bragging right.
