Women in Timber, Ghana launched

By Razak Baba

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has selected the 10th of next month as Green Ghana Day. The occasion will be used to plant 20 million trees across the country as part of the Government’s aggressive reforestation and afforestation agenda to restore the lost forest cover of Ghana and contribute to global efforts to fight climate change. The Sector Minister, Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor has therefore called on all Ghanaians to actively participate in the event. He announced this in a message at the launch of the Women in Timber-Ghana Association, in Kumasi.

Women in Timber-Ghana Association was formed in February 2022 to establish a common front and voice to confront the myriad of issues affecting businesses in the sector. The Association mainly aims to serve as an active platform for building capacities of women in timber in Ghana towards realizing the economic and social viabilities of their businesses.

It has 150 registered members. The Association is expected to join forces with like-minded groups to tackle issues such as reforestation of degraded portions of the country’s forests for future supply of raw materials and the fight against climate change.

The launch of the Women in Timber-Ghana Association in Kumasi, witnessed the swearing in of its National Executives by a Legal Practitioner, Mrs. Theresa Flora Appiagyei Dedu.

Some personalities were also acknowledged for their immense contribution towards the establishment of the Association. The President of Women in Timber-Ghana Association, Mrs. Ernestina Owusu Banahene explained the relevance of the Association and called for support by positioning women at the forefront of addressing issues of climate change.
