Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has encouraged young Muslim women to believe in themselves and prepare to take up leadership roles in Ghana.

She made the call during an event called Light of Her Deen, an intimate Ramadan iftar and mentorship gathering for young Muslim women.

Speaking as the guest speaker at the event on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in Accra, the MP said she has worked hard over the past six years to ensure that women who come after her as MP to represent Salaga South Constituency will have a smoother path into leadership.

“I am striving to make sure that the next woman who comes after me will build on my legacy,” she said. “I do not want a situation where people say a woman was given the chance and she failed, so they will not trust another woman again.”

According to her, the responsibility of representing her people and being one of the few women in parliament has been a heavy task, but it has strengthened her commitment to serve.

She noted that women remain under-represented in Ghana’s parliament. Out of the 273 seats in the legislature, she said only 49 are occupied by women, representing about 14.9% of the House.

Because of this, she urged more women to step forward and contest elections.

“We are coming for the seats,” she said. “Women must not be seen as exceptions in parliament. We want it to become normal.”

The Salaga South lawmaker also spoke about the importance of the country’s legal framework in promoting women’s participation in leadership. She questioned whether some provisions of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana fully support women’s political involvement and said more conversations are needed to strengthen women’s representation.

She encouraged the young women at the gathering to listen to their inner voices and pursue leadership if they feel called to serve, stating that serving as a parliamentarian is a calling.

“I believe being a Member of Parliament is a calling,” she said. “It is a calling to serve humanity and to affect the lives of people in positive ways.”

She urged the participants to stay committed to their communities and work hard to bring change, saying that leadership should always focus on improving people’s lives.
