Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail in connection with an ongoing investigation into illegal mining activities.

Wontumi was granted bail to the tune of GH¢1 million with two sureties, which he has since fulfilled. He is expected to face three mining-related charges when he appears before the High Court in Accra on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

The NPP regional chairman reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025, following an invitation linked to the alleged illegal mining case.

His appearance came after Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine issued an ultimatum last Friday, warning that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to report to the police.

Speaking to the media, his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, said his client was prepared to cooperate fully with investigators. However, he cautioned against any move to revoke Wontumi’s existing police enquiry bail, saying such an action would be “vigorously resisted.”
