Work resumes on Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road after residents complain

Work on the 103-kilometer Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road in the Upper East Region has resumed after the project stalled several months due to the lack of funds.

The 116-kilometer stretch of road was awarded under former President John Dramani Mahama to a Brazilian contractor Queiroz Galvão and a local contractor MAWUMS in 2016 at a cost of 613 million cedis with funding from the Road Fund.

Delay in completing the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road was a major source of worry for residents of the Upper East Region.

This is because the road is an international road linking the regional capital, Bolgatanga, to Bawku, a commercial town, and to the neighboring countries of Burkina Faso and Togo.

Due to the deplorable nature of the road armed robbers have taken advantage of the slow movement of commercial vehicles by attacking passengers especially at night.

MAWUMS Construction Limited, a Ghanaian Company, is almost done with its 13-kilometer stretch of the road awarded to the construction firm which is open to traffic.

According to the leadership of the Queiros Galvao, a Brazilian Company, working on 103-kilometer of the road, they are currently at lot-7. The lot-7 is the Zebila Township, capital of the Bawku West District which is located on the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road.

Some residents in Zebila who spoke with radio Ghana expressed their happiness over the ongoing construction of the road.

In August 2019, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako Atta revealed that government has secured an amount of 68 million pounds from the ICBC Standard Bank of the United Kingdom for the continuation of the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road.

He was quick to add that, government will add an additional 60 million to the contractors to enable them execute the project within schedule.
