Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate May Day tomorrow.

In recent years, May Day has become known as Labour Day, Workers Day, or International Workers Day.

It is a day set aside to highlight the crucial role workers play in the development of the country.

Workers also use the day to raise awareness on some concerns mostly, poor working conditions and remuneration. It appears the major issue on the lips of workers ahead of this year’s May Day celebration, has shifted from COVID-19 last year to the minimum wage and improved standard of living.

Radio Ghana’s Nathaniel Nartey spoke to some working groups who expressed concern about the delay in the determination of the new minimum wage.

National Chairman of the Public Services Workers Union of TUC, Ken TweneboahKoduah assured members that the Union will work to ensure that the new minimum wage is released as soon as practicable.

General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union Solomon Kotei called on workers to put the issues of minimum wage behind them and celebrate May Day while government works with other stakeholders to come out with a new minimum wage.

General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union, GAWU Edward Kareweh said increment in the minimum wage should have been determined before announcing new taxes.

Meanwhile, Labor Expert Austin Gamey has advised workers to tone down their complaints about the delay in determining the new minimum wage ahead of the May Day celebration tomorrow. This is because government is working to ensure the determination is done as soon as possible.
