The government has completed the evacuation of nearly 1,900 Ghanaians from South Africa following xenophobic attacks and concerns over their safety.
The final batch of 41 evacuees arrived in Accra on September 4, 2026, bringing the government-led exercise, which began in May, to an end.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the returnees would receive reintegration support, including financial assistance, healthcare, psychosocial support and employment assistance.
The government has also repatriated the remains of two Ghanaians who died during the attacks.
The evacuation formed part of the government’s response to concerns over the safety of Ghanaian nationals affected by the violence in South Africa.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry said the reintegration measures were intended to support the returnees as they settled back into their communities and resumed their livelihoods.
The completion of the exercise means that all Ghanaians covered by the government-led evacuation programme have now been brought back to Ghana.
