President John Dramani Mahama has praised the government of China for granting zero-tariff access to Ghanaian and African products, describing the move as a strong symbol of solidarity and partnership between the two nations.
Speaking at the Ghana-China Investment and Economic Forum in Beijing, President Mahama said the agreement, which is expected to be formally signed off by the end of October 2025, represents a major boost for Ghanaian exporters, agro-processors, and manufacturers seeking wider access to global markets.
“Between 2020 and 2024, China’s exports to Ghana rose by nearly 46%, while Ghana’s exports to China increased by over 11%,” President Mahama revealed. “China’s decision to grant zero-tariff access to Ghanaian and African products signifies confidence in our partnership. It opens vast market opportunities for Ghanaian exporters, agro-processors, and manufacturers.”
He expressed optimism that the new zero-tariff framework would stimulate industrial growth, expand bilateral trade, and support Ghana’s broader agenda to promote value-added exports and diversify its economy.
“I am happy to inform you that we have reached agreement in principle, and we have targeted the end of October to be able to sign off on the zero-tariff principle,” the President said. “I wish to commend the Government of China for this act of solidarity.”
President Mahama noted that the initiative comes at a critical time when the multilateral trading system is facing disruptions from unilateral tariff measures imposed by some countries.
“We are all aware that the multilateral rules-based trading system is being upended by the unilateral slapping of tariffs in different countries,” he stated. “This is the time to stand together in solidarity, and this initiative by China is both timely and commendable.”
The President underscored that the policy will help enhance the competitiveness of Ghanaian goods, particularly in agriculture, cocoa processing, textiles, and light manufacturing, by eliminating tariff barriers that have long constrained exports to major Asian markets.
President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with China in areas such as trade, infrastructure, energy, and green technology, emphasizing that both nations stand to benefit from a more equitable and open trading environment.
“This partnership represents shared prosperity and mutual growth,” he said. “Together, Ghana and China can set a global example of cooperation that delivers real benefits for our people and our economies.”
