18 suspected Western-Togoland separatists remanded into Police custody

Eighteen members of the suspected Western Togoland separatist group were Monday, December 30 remanded into prison custody by the Yendi circuit Court.

They are to reappear January 9, 2020 to enable prosecution to conduct further investigations. The eighteen suspects, including a one hundred year old man, were picked up at a primary school in Bimbilla following a tip off.

According to a Police source, the suspects were allegedly holding a meeting to rally support for their separatist movement and to recruit some youth of the area for their activities.

The source  told Radio Ghana, that the intelligence gathered so far, reveals that, the separatists are moving around, the Volta, Oti, Northern and Upper East Regions garnering the support of the residents to break away from Ghana.

Radio Ghana investigations also revealed that, the separatists were recently driven away by a prominent chief along the Eastern Corridor when they came to his court to convince him to join the movement for independence.

The Western Togoland group, is a separatist group, which  claim that, parts of the Volta, Oti, Northern and Upper East regions belong to them.

They maintained there is an agreement to claim independence from Ghana after a certain period of time.

The area was under German rule prior to World War I, but was later divided between France and Britain following the defeat of Germany in the World War. The area later opted to join Ghana after independence through a plebiscite.
